Farewell to Our Patriarch, Teacher, and Great Friend…

It is with deep sadness and from a very brokenhearted place that we must share this sad news. One week ago today at 4:56pm Spring Thaw’s spirit was lifted up from his aged worn and tired body. For the last 3 weeks of Life he had been struggling with the extreme cold, new meds, arthritis flare and then dehydration. The past 3 years proved winter to become his difficult season. This winter has been consistently brutal & bitter.

Between 1/4/18 and 1/20/18 Spring began having real trouble getting to his feet and we needed to call in professional help twice during this time. He was getting round the clock care to support him eating and hydrating as well as remedies for pain. It became a matter of too much, too late. On Saturday, 1/20/18 he was discovered downed in his stall and Mid Atlantic Equine was called. For the next 4+ hours we worked with everything possible to help Spring to his feet. All of us (including him) exhausted every effort. At 4:44pm the decision was made to set him free. At 4:56pm EST the great heart of our patriarch, our teacher and healer, our colleague, our namesake, our great friend and comedian stopped beating.

The evening gave birth to a magnificent sunset as his Herd-mates entered the barn to see his lifeless body. It has taken a week to share this news due to the shock, deep sadness and broken grieving state we are in, for his heart humans, his Herd mates, caretakers, volunteers, clients and friends – this is an enormous loss and it is really hard to navigate. Sessions have been scaled back due to the super cold and its just as well because this is a time we will need to re-balance, re-center and mainly to love one another and be gentle. Spring’s presence will be greatly missed in the field, in the barn and most definitely in the EAP arena.

As many of you may remember, when our matriarch left for the heavens we honored her memory with 52 weekly posts called Straw Tuesdays filled with her many lessons and gifts to share and give new life. Well, there is no doubt we have 52 of these in Spring-isms. Some will be funny too. For the next 52 weeks we will share a piece of the Jedihorse’s wisdoms, lessons and jokes. It is our way of remembering all that he gave to us and our mission. This is his legacy, it is what he dedicated his life too and for. #thatJedihorse #emotionalsurgeon #SRoHfounder #SRoLfounder
